"India have belief we can beat any team in the world" - Arundhati Reddy
After opening their tour of Australia with an emphatic victory at the SCG, India are riding a wave of self-assurance brought about by their victory in the ODI World Cup.
India were well ahead of the DLS target when rain halted their chase shortly after the minimum of five overs were completed. Arundhati Reddy took a career-best 4 for 22, and the home team were bowled out for 133.
Reddy stated, "I believe the Indian team has been playing really good cricket over the last few years." "We've always been close to winning games, but I think the team now believes we can beat anyone in the world. I think that's the confidence that helps us and we want to continue that."
Despite losing two wickets in the powerplay, Australia were handily placed on 68 for 2 after seven overs but a superb catch from captain Harmanpreet Kaur to remove Ellyse Perry off Reddy began a collapse of 8 for 65 and the last five wickets falling for 12 after a recovery between Georgia Wareham and Nicola Carey.
Reddy stated, "Perry is a big wicket; you want to get her early, and I think that catch changed the momentum for us." "After that, I believe they lost a few wickets. She is an excellent fielder, and obviously it is admirable that she took that out to give us momentum going into the next inning.
Renuka Singh's powerplay bowling, which included a maiden and three straight overs, was also praised by Reddy. She stated, "I thought she was outstanding today." "I believe that was an extraordinary over to bowl a maiden... and to Phoebe Litchfield.
"Obviously she's been a quality player for India in the last quite a few years and again, she showed a lot of her experience today. We talked a lot about the best lengths to hit on these wickets for our type of bowlers even in the intervals. Again, I believe she deserves a lot of credit. I think that spell was outstanding."
After Reddy's 4 for 26 in an ODI at the WACA in 2024, when she defeated Litchfield, Perry, Georgia Voll, and Beth Mooney to take the lead, the performance in Australia marked her second consecutive season with career-best scores.
She stated, "I love Australia, it's the country I enjoy the most." "I think when we landed here, just the vibes I get. Growing up I used to watch a lot of Test matches, Ashes in Australia, and used to always want to come here and play cricket. Clearly, I enjoy this location; the previous visit was pleasant, and I've started off well, so I hope to continue."
India have only ever won a bilateral series against Australia, a 2-1 victory in the 2016 T20I, and they could win the T20 leg of this tour on Thursday in Canberra. A points system will be used to determine the overall winners across the three formats, with two points awarded for each white-ball match, four for a win in the Test, or two for a draw.
