'Emotions got to me' - Konstas keen to settle into Test cricket

At just 19, Sam Konstas faced an unexpected challenge in his early foray into Test cricket—not his batting, but handling the intense emotions that came with performing before a massive crowd at the MCG last December. As he adjusts to life on the international stage, Konstas is learning to regulate his breathing, rely on his training, and stay composed amid the noise. "In my first few Tests, the atmosphere definitely got to me," Konstas recalled, reflecting on his debut against India. "But some time away to regroup and fine-tune my game has been valuable. Now, I'm hoping to make the most of the next opportunity." That chance comes in Australia's opening Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown, beginning June 25. The selectors have recalled both Konstas and Josh Inglis, with Marnus Labuschagne dropped and Steven Smith sidelined due to a dislocated finger. This marks Konstas' third Test appearance, after narrowly missing out on selection for the World Test Championship final when Labuschagne was elevated to opener. Now in the Caribbean, Konstas is leaning on familiar routines to center himself. "My diary has become a vital part of my preparation," Konstas explained, showing the tattoo of his Test cap number, 468, etched on his forearm. "It allows me to revisit my checkpoints, especially when playing overseas, and stay grounded." He attributes much of his development to the guidance of Australia’s seasoned veterans. "Breath control, open communication with my batting partner, and staying level during intense moments are things I’ve focused on," Konstas said. "I’m constantly learning from guys like Uzi [Usman Khawaja], Marnus, and Smith. Being surrounded by such experienced players at 19 is an incredible privilege." While aware of the fierce competition for spots in Australia's deep squad, Konstas remains patient and determined. "The team is stacked with talent, so I know opportunities are rare," he said. "But when they come, I want to seize them. I’m extremely thankful for the chance to even be here." Following the opening Test in Bridgetown, the teams will head to Grenada for the second Test on July 3, and then to Jamaica for the final match of the series starting July 13.
