Jamie Overton, Urvil Patel power CSK to third straight win
Josh Inglis played for Lucknow Super Giants, and Urvil Patel played for Chennai Super Kings. In their first six overs, LSG scored 91/1. CSK defeated 97/1. Inglis's carnage meant LSG crossed 200 despite a middle-order muddle. With a flurry of perfectly timed bat-throwing, Urvil slammed the second-fastest fifty with a feast of six. LSG wanted a lot more, but Jamie Overton stuffed them. The score reached 200 after a cameo by Shahbaz Ahmed. Buoyed by Urvil, CSK were ruthless for the most part, before pausing at the finish line and ultimately sneaking through.
Loosely put, Urvil. He opened the chase in a 23-ball blitz, appearing to have reduced a 204-run chase to a leisurely stroll by the time he passed away. However, Overton played a crucial role: At one point, Inglis threatened to end the game, but Pant's three balls and his dismissal brought CSK back into the game. Overton's triple strike prevented LSG from meeting their initial projections, even though he gave up 17 runs in his final over.
Inglis promised to make headlines and break records for the first half of the game. He needed 17 balls to reach fifty, which was the fastest time ever at the Chepauk (until Urvil). He was on 77* off 25 by the six-over mark. He punished slot balls down the ground, but the highlight was his absurd hits behind the wicket. He did that at least three times against Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary after he silenced Akeal Hosein. He tickled a catch behind to Sanju Samson in the 10th over, the only time that scoop failed. It kicked off a chain reaction of dismissals.
With an unrestrained attack, Inglis quickly warmed up the less-than-full Chepauk, making it appear a little sluggish. But due to poor running and a lack of boundaries, LSG could only limp in the follow-up. Markram was killed by a direct hit from Brevis. In hindsight, LSG had no such magic moments on the field.
Batting for only the second time this season, Shahbaz was quiet until the 17th over, ambling to 9 off 10. However, Mukesh unlocked him with a six. He went after Overton in the next over, hitting four balls for 16 runs to guarantee a score of at least 200. It was only LSG's third time putting together a fifty-plus stand for less than seven wickets.
In contrast to Inglis's bold scoops, CSK's first pair combined purpose with a little bit more orthodoxy. Samson and Gaikwad were on equal footing by the third over. Pant took a risk by bringing Rathi in. Additionally, the move worked after Samson attempted an excessive number of shots and gave up a four and a six.
Amazingly, Urvil took control from that point on. Gaikwad was content to play second fiddle. With baseball-style swings off Avesh Khan, Urvil hit a hat trick of sixes, then tore Digvesh Rathi apart with a 25-run over of numbing leg-side hits. Prince Yadav and Mohammed Shami, their Powerplay cogs, crucially went wicketless.
CSK seemed to get a little too comfortable marveling at Urvil's assault, and as a result, they lost sight of their goal. CSK still needed 35 runs off 23 after Brevis and Kartik left one after the other. That was largely courtesy of two Rathi overs that amounted to eight runs combined. The brief stutter rendered the Chepauk silent and put their pursuit on shaky ground—call it miscalculation or complacency.
Yet, LSG's bowlers couldn't keep it tight, slipping in the odd extra or a poor ball, never taking the game too far out of CSK's reach. They were also hurt by their poor catch at the worst possible time. In the penultimate over, Impact Player Prashant Veer was dropped twice on consecutive balls. A crucial six tipped the balance once more after two balls. Shivam Dube's two sixes sealed the deal, and Pant punted once more, this time choosing Markram over Shahbaz for the 20th.
CSK continue their rise, rebounding significantly from their initial three defeats. With a higher net run-rate, they are now fifth on the table, pushing RR one slot below. Also, this was only their second time chasing down a 180+ score since 2019. Regarding LSG, the sight of a downed Pant after a game has become a ritual. Their chances are officially over with their eighth defeat.
Before they play again in Lucknow, both teams have a break of five days.
