Juairiya’s fifty powers Bangladesh to winning start at Women’s T20 WC
Juairiya Ferdous scored a match-winning fifty in her Women's T20 World Cup debut as Bangladesh held their nerve to defeat Netherlands by six wickets in a tense Group B match at Edgbaston. This was Bangladesh's highest run chase in Women's T20 World Cup history, and it was a successful start to their campaign.
Bangladesh cruised through the Powerplay with a target of 140 before suffering a dramatic collapse. However, Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akter's unbroken 50-run partnership got them home with five balls to spare.
Choosing to bat, Netherlands suffered early setbacks when Phebe Molkenboer was run out by Marufa Akter in the second over and Heather Siegers by Fariha Trisna. Even though Bangladesh controlled the scoring, captain Babette de Leede anchored the innings with a composed 50 off 45 balls. Before receiving support from Robine Rijke and Frederique Overdijk, De Leede overcame early plays-and-misses, a missed opportunity, and an overturned LBW decision. The Dutch captain eventually reached her fifty but was run out while attempting a second run, as Netherlands finished with 139 for 8 after late contributions from Iris Zwilling and Silver Siegers.
Bangladesh's chase began in explosive fashion as Juairiya and Dilara Akter added 67 without loss inside eight overs. As she raced to a 32-ball fifty, Juairiya dominated the scoring, confidently taking on both pace and spin and hitting seven fours and two sixes. Dilara played the supporting role effectively as Bangladesh surged ahead of the required rate.
Netherlands staged a remarkable comeback just as the chase appeared straightforward. Caroline de Lange changed the game by taking two wickets in two deliveries: she bowled captain Nigar Sultana first and then bowled Juairiya after she had scored fifty. Dilara was bowled for 26 by Silver Siegers, and Frederique Overdijk followed with a brilliant direct-hit runout to send Sobhana Mostary back. From 67 without loss, Bangladesh slipped to 85 for 4.
Sharmin and Shorna then restored calm with a measured 56-run partnership that gradually shifted the momentum back. Before Sharmin's crucial four off Isabel Woning ended the drought in boundaries, the pair rotated strike effectively. The pair kept chipping away at the goal steadily now that they had the asking rate under control once more.
