KL Rahul begins England tour with century against England Lions

KL Rahul made a resounding return to red-ball cricket, scoring a composed 116 on the opening day of the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions in Northampton. His innings, featuring 15 boundaries and a six, was instrumental in guiding India A to a total of 319 for 7 in 83 overs, despite early setbacks and challenging conditions. Rahul's century, his 19th in first-class cricket, came after India A lost both openers early to England Lions' pacer Chris Woakes, who finished with figures of 3 for 50. Rahul steadied the innings with an 86-run partnership alongside Karun Nair (40), followed by a crucial 121-run stand with wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who contributed 52 runs. This performance not only underscores Rahul's readiness for the upcoming five-Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley, but also positions him as a strong candidate to fill the opening slot left vacant by Rohit Sharma's retirement. Rahul is the most experienced batter in Shubman Gill's India. With the retirements of Rohit and Virat Kohli, he has a big responsibility, not just as part of the leadership group, but also as the batting pivot. The century will no doubt boost his confidence. But as he found out on the day, he needs to make sure there's no lapse in concentration.
