In an unprecedented move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed fines on players for their poor showing in the T20 World Cup, currently underway. Even though there were some impressive performances in an otherwise mediocre campaign, there are conflicting reports that the fines were specifically imposed after the team's meager 61-run defeat to India. There was no response from a spokesperson for the PCB. According to local reports, each player has been fined PKR 5 million. The process behind the decision remains unclear, but the penalty appears to have been applied uniformly across the squad. It is a curious call, especially considering that Sahibzada Farhan, Usman Tariq, Fakhar Zaman, and Abrar Ahmed all gave impressive performances on their own. That said, the broader backdrop is hard to ignore: Pakistan have failed to reach the semifinals in each of the last four ICC white-ball tournaments since their run to the T20 World Cup final in 2022. The Pakistan team made it to the Super Eight stage despite a crushing defeat to India. There, they won one match, lost one, and had one game called off, against New Zealand. They ended up tied on three points with New Zealand, who progressed to the semifinals based on a higher net run rate (NRR). The only match Pakistan won in the Super Eight round was against the hosts, Sri Lanka. However, Pakistan's victory was not enough to surpass New Zealand on NRR. "For their performance at the World Cup, the PCB has fined each cricketer $5 million. In fact the decision was made right after the defeat against India. The players have been made aware by officials that there has been sufficient leniency. A local media outlet reported, "Financial benefits will only come with performance (sci) from now on." However, it has been reported that the players' contracts do not include a fine of this nature.
