Priyansh-Connolly fireworks keep Punjab Kings unbeaten

Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly's brutal 182-run partnership powered Punjab Kings to a commanding 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants at home on Sunday (April 19), strengthening their grip on the top spot in the IPL 2026 standings. Even though the second-wicket pair didn't reach the centuries they seemed to be destined for, their assault had effectively taken the game away from LSG before the chase even started. Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, and Aiden Markram offered brief resistance, but LSG lacked the collective effort required to pull off a record chase, ultimately slumping to their third consecutive defeat. Punjab responded to the early loss of the in-form Prabhsimran Singh in the first over with a blistering 182-run stand for the second wicket. Arya and Connolly attacked every corner of the ground, sending the LSG bowlers on a relentless leather hunt during their 80-ball association. Connolly's 87 off 46, remarkably, came at a slower pace than his partner. He crawled to 15 off his first 20 deliveries before exploding, smashing 72 off his next 26 balls at a staggering strike rate of 277 and playing only four dots then. Arya, meanwhile, was the chief aggressor throughout, tearing his way to 93 off just 37 balls, including a record nine sixes to go with his four boundaries. The devastation reached its highest point in a 32-run over bowled by Aiden Markram, during which the duo hit five maximums, making it the most expensive over ever bowled by a LSG player. By the 14th over, PBKS had increased to 185/1 and appeared on track for a rare 300-plus total. Both batters appeared to be set for centuries. The wickets fell in a heap as they fell. Prince Yadav provided the much-needed breakthrough for LSG by dismissing Connolly, and Arya and skipper Shreyas Iyer followed in quick succession. Nehal Wadhera added a brief cameo, but 185/1 quickly became 208/5. Marcus Stoinis (29 off 16) and Shashank Singh (17 off 6) then injected late momentum with a brisk 44-run stand in the slog overs, ensuring the innings still finished past the 250 mark. LSG promoted Ayush Badoni to open, and he struggled initially against Arshdeep Singh but the new pair quickly got a move on through a couple of expensive following overs in the Powerplay. Arshdeep, Xavier Bartlett and Marco Jansen all proved expensive as LSG upped the ante. Vijaykumar Vyshak eventually put an end to that experiement with Badoni falling for 35 off 21. With a few maximums from Jansen, the LSG skipper got going. Pant and Marsh's initial partnership maintained that momentum, scoring 48 runs for the second wicket. But a slowdown came with Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal's miserly overs in the middle that pushed the asking rate past 15. That pressure - with just 20 runs coming between overs 9-11 - resulted in Marsh's wicket to Chahal. Pant counter-attacked with back-to-back sixes off the leggie, but Arshdeep at the other end put an end to his fireworks. The skipper made 43 off 23 but that was nearly not enough. However, Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal's poor middle overs caused a slowdown, pushing the asking rate above 15. Pant launched a counterattack with two sixes off the leggie, but Arshdeep stopped his fireworks at the other end. The skipper made 43 off 23 but that was nearly not enough. Before Punjab return to the field, they have six days. They're off to Delhi for next week's Saturday double-header. LSG, meanwhile, head back home where they'll take on Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday (April 22).
