Shubman Gill named India's new Test captain

Shubman Gill has been appointed as India's new Test captain, marking a significant generational shift in the team's leadership. At 25 years old, Gill becomes the 37th player to lead India in Test cricket, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from the format. Gill's first assignment as captain will be the upcoming five-match Test series against England, commencing on June 20, 2025, at Headingley, Leeds. This series also marks the beginning of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain for the tour. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah, previously considered a leadership contender, was not appointed captain to manage his workload and preserve his fitness, especially given the demanding nature of a five-Test series. The squad features a blend of experience and fresh talent, with call-ups for Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan, and Shardul Thakur. Veteran seamer Mohammed Shami was omitted due to a late injury setback. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar expressed confidence in Gill's leadership potential, acknowledging that while the role presents challenges, it's an opportunity for Gill to grow and guide the team through a new era.
