Spinners Spin Zimbabwe to Defeat as Hetmyer Ramps Up
Shimron Hetmyer's blazing 85 off 34 balls led West Indies to a massive 107-run win over Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2026. Hetmyer's innings included 7 fours and 7 sixes, and he brought up the fastest fifty for West Indies in T20 World Cup history in just 19 balls. Rovman Powell supported him with a quickfire 59, and the spinners Gudakesh Motie (4/28) and Akeal Hosein (3/28) sealed the win for West Indies.
In response, Zimbabwe were all out for only 147, suffering their first loss in this tournament after topping Group B in the lead-up to the Super Eight.
It was Hetmyer, who started the carnage with a 19-ball half-century before former captain Powell and the rest of the middle order joined the six-hitting party. Hetmyer, Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder all kept launching the ball into the night sky and made it look ridiculously easy, like West Indies' hitters did in 2012 and 2016.
Zimbabwe got off to a great start, making early inroads into West Indies' batting lineup. Left-arm quick Richard Ngarava returned from injury and immediately made an impact, dismissing Brandon King with a clever slower ball, catching him off guard at 9 off 12 balls. The momentum continued into the final over of the powerplay, where Craig Evans' offcutter led to Shai Hope being caught spectacularly by Brian Bennett in the outfield, leaving Hope with 14 off 12 balls.
Hetmyer's spin-hitting masterclass
Despite losing two wickets, West Indies scored 55 runs in their first six overs, with Hetmyer responsible for 20 of those. Hetmyer was just getting started at No. 3, a new(ish) role for him in this T20 World Cup after spending the previous edition on the bench.
Identified by coach Daren Sammy as a batter who could perform Nicholas Pooran's role, Hetmyer aced it on Monday. He was particularly severe on spin, cracking Graeme Cremer and Sikandar Raza for 56 off 17 balls, with all seven of his sixes coming against spin. Hetmyer's strike rate of 329.41 is the second-highest among batters to have scored 50-plus runs against spinners in a men's T20I, where ball-by-ball data is available.
Rovman Powell took West Indies' batting to the next level, hitting three more sixes, including a massive 106-metre monster over extra-cover off Dion Myers in the 13th over. He brought up a 29-ball fifty, showcasing his power-hitting skills. Powell's aggressive batting even forced Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza to spend time off the field, with Ngarava standing in for him.
Zimbabwe need a strong start to stay in the game. However, that was not to be and by the end of three overs, they were three down. Gudakesh Motie then precipitated Zimbabwe's collapse with his career-best T20I figures of 4 for 28.
Sikandar Raza's innings was short-lived, hurt finger and all. Gudakesh Motie's delightful delivery castled him, pitching on middle and ripping away to hit off. Akeal Hosein's stock ball got Brian Bennett, drifting in and turning away to hit off - a contender for ball of the day!
Shimron Hetmyer's blazing 19-ball half-century is a record-breaker! He surpassed his own record for West Indies' fastest fifty at a men's T20 World Cup, previously set at 22 balls against Scotland in Kolkata. Zimbabwe's fielding mistakes, including two drops by Tashinga Musekiwa, certainly helped Hetmyer reach this milestone. He went on to score 85 off 34 balls, hitting 7 fours and 7 sixes, leading West Indies to a massive 254/6.
West Indies 254 for 6 (Hetmyer 85, Powell 59, Muzarabani 2-42) beat Zimbabwe 147 (Evans 43, Myers 28, Motie 4-28, Hosein 3-28) by 107 runs
