Khawaja, who is based out of Queensland, will have a homecoming of sorts with this move.
"I've expressed it for quite a while, that Brisbane is home, Queensland is home, and to be here, chief of Queensland, and presently joining the Heat - it is truly invigorating," said Khawaja.
"I realize I will play before my family, and a home group, when I am at the Gabba or Metricon Stadium with the Heat. I love the Thunder and the Thunder Nation, and yet, this is a change that comes brilliantly.
"It was anything but a simple choice, it was an extremely intense one, however the timing feels right. I like to say I used to be a privileged Queensland and presently I am one.
"I have been freely attached with the Heat through my Queensland jobs for a long time, thus I am anticipating the test of taking a stab at a genuinely new thing by going along with them now," he said.
