Allen, Richardson leads Perth Scorchers to home qualifier
With a six-wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars in a winner-takes-all match at Optus Stadium, Perth Scorchers secured a crucial home qualifier and the top spot on the BBL ladder. The Scorchers' bowling unit put on a masterclass to restrict the Stars to just 130 runs in a match that was extremely important to both teams' hopes of reaching the finals. They then cruised home with more than three overs remaining. The Scorchers will host the Qualifier at home as a result of the victory, giving them a double chance to win a record sixth BBL title. Meanwhile, the Stars will drop to third place and must take the more dangerous sudden-death Knockout route.
The Stars were reeling at 8 for 2 when Cooper Connolly struck twice in the opening over to kick off the drama. Even though Connolly was unable to complete his hat trick, the Stars fell to 32 for 3 in the PowerPlay after the early chaos set the tone for a dominant Scorchers performance. Jhye Richardson joined the party in the second over to remove Sam Harper.
With a battling 55 off 39 deliveries that included five boundaries and two sixes, Captain Marcus Stoinis provided the only real resistance for the Stars. He displayed the kind of leadership and composure that his team so desperately required. With 19, Campbell Kellaway provided brief support, and the two of them combined to score 50 runs, taking the score from 15 for 3 to 67 for 4, giving the Stars something to bowl at. However, the Perth bowlers' relentless pressure continued to cause wickets to fall around Stoinis. When the batter attempted to charge, Aaron Hardie took the crucial wicket of Kellaway but was only able to edge behind keeper Josh Inglis, making the situation one-way.
In his 3.2 overs, Richardson returned to wreak havoc in the middle and final overs. He played a sensational spell, taking four wickets for just 16 runs. He got rid of Glenn Maxwell with a pull shot that hit fine leg, then he caught and bowled Haris Rauf with the next ball to complete his hat trick, and he caught Mitchell Swepson behind to end the innings. As the Stars were bowled out for 130 in 18.2 overs, David Payne contributed with 2 for 30, removing both Stoinis and Tom Curran in quick succession. Mahli Beardman also took the wicket of Hilton Cartwright.
In order to maintain their meager total, the Stars desperately needed early wickets, and Haris Rauf provided them with exactly that with an explosive opening session. The Pakistani speedster produced a devastating burst of pace and accuracy to rip through the Scorchers' top order, claiming three wickets for just two runs in his fiery opening spell that momentarily gave the Stars hope. Mitchell Marsh was bowled out when he top-edged a pull shot that flew through the air before Glenn Maxwell made a juggling catch near short midwicket with the first ball of his spell. Rauf continued his rampage by striking out Cooper Connolly for two runs, caught at cover, and then LBWing Josh Inglis for one, reducing the Scorchers to 26 for three in 4.1 innings. The Stars saw an opportunity to defend the small target for a brief moment, but that was all the visitors got.
Despite the early wobble, Aaron Hardie and Ashton Turner's crucial partnership kept the ship afloat and gradually took the game away from the Stars. In order to keep the required run rate within reach, the pair batted with maturity and purpose, judiciously rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. Finn Allen, fresh from his maiden BBL century against the Renegades earlier in the week, went up the gears and smashed seven sixes in his 39-ball knock for 69. The Scorchers reached their destination with 19 balls to spare when Aaron Hardie batted more calmly and went unbeaten with 41 runs off 37.
