Bangladesh, Pakistan Begin New Era, Eyeing 2027 World Cup Glory

Bangladesh and Pakistan are looking to start fresh with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Bangladesh, currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, is focused on improving their overall standard in limited-overs cricket rather than worrying too much about direct qualification for the World Cup. Head coach Phil Simmons emphasized that the team's ultimate aim is to enhance their ODI cricket quality, targeting a stronger position in the rankings before the qualification cut-off date. Pakistan, on the other hand, has taken a different approach, resting senior players like Babar Azam and giving opportunities to youngsters, with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan's captain, stated that the team is looking to build a strong unit for the upcoming World Cup cycle. Bangladesh's coaches are focusing on strengthening the middle order, bringing back Litton Das and Afif Hossain to add stability to the batting lineup. They're relying on openers Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar to set the tone with aggressive starts, allowing the middle order to build on their momentum. Bowling-wise, they're looking to improve the middle overs, a common pain point. Bangladesh's bowling lineup looks solid, with Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Rishad Hossain leading the charge. They're expected to bowl most of the overs, supported by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam. With Shoriful Islam and Nahid Rana on standby, Bangladesh has pace options to exploit. The buck however stops with captain Shaheen Shah Afridi who has to bring his A-game with the new ball. Afridi has Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim for support, though the spin attack looks a bit thin with only Abrar Ahmed among the experienced bowlers. West Indies and Bangladesh bowled spin in 84 percent of their overs in the previous ODI series played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. In one game, West Indies bowled 50 overs of spin. It should tell you what to expect in this venue, although both coaches Phil Simmons and Mike Hesson have said that they have seen an improved surface ahead of the first ODI. The weather forecast says there could be unseasonal rain in the afternoon. The upcoming three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Pakistan is crucial for both teams, with Bangladesh aiming to overtake West Indies in the rankings and secure direct qualification for the World Cup.
