Bonus-point win lifts Pretoria Capitals to top SA20 Table
Following their third consecutive victory, Pretoria Capitals moved to the top of the points table with a 53-run bonus-point victory over MI Cape Town. The loss, meanwhile, anchored MICT to the bottom of the points table and extinguished all realistic hopes of reaching the Playoffs.
Despite a promising start, the Capitals only scored 41 runs off the PowerPlay when they were asked to bat first. Connor Esterhuizen started with three fours off the second over bowled by Trent Boult, and Shai Hope started with a six off Linde in the third over. However, the left-arm spinner immediately responded by removing Hope from the following ball.
Kagiso Rabada bowled Esterhuizen in the fifth over after Esterhuizen failed to take advantage of his start. The PowerPlay's subsequent three overs passed quickly and without incident. A shift in momentum was signaled by Wihan Lubbe's six off Rashid Khan in the tenth over, but two balls later, he attempted another big hit.
Before being bowled by a Rabada yorker in the 13th over, Jordan Cox hit a six and a four despite struggling for momentum throughout his innings. However, the tone of the innings changed when Dewald Brevis and Sherfane Rutherford joined forces at the crease.
Rutherford began his assault by carting Boult for 20 runs in the 16th over after settling in for a few overs and using DRS to overturn an LBW decision. Following his partner's cue, Brevis hit two sixes off Rabada to start the 17th.
Rutherford was dropped twice in the 18th over, and in the next over, he struck his way to a 24-ball fifty, making MICT pay. The Capitals won despite losing Brevis in the 19th over and Rutherford on the very last delivery, scoring 64 runs in the last five overs.
Rassie van der Dussen led MICT's response in the first over, scoring a six and two boundaries before holing out to long-on in the third over. Ryan Rickelton, fresh off a century, was unable to get going and fell in the sixth over, despite the fact that Reeza Hendricks started off well by driving Lizaad Williams for two fours.
Nicholas Pooran started his innings with a six and a four, bringing MICT's PowerPlay score close to 40/2. However, he was run out in the next over after hitting another six, ending his innings short.
MICT fell from 46/2 to 55/6 at the end of the 10th over after Pooran's wicket sparked a catastrophic middle-order collapse. Gideon Peters, who had already thrown out Rickelton, defeated Karim Janat and Corbin Bosch in the same match, while Keshav Maharaj threw out Linde.
Hendricks' unbeaten 68 off 50 was insufficient to revive MICT's sputtering chase, and he was left to watch the disaster unfold at the other end. Hendricks remained largely sedentary and only fired his fatal shots. In the 18th over, he hit two fours and a six while striking out Peters for two sixes. However, his efforts were insufficient to even prevent the Capitals from receiving a bonus point, as MICT fell 53 runs short of the goal.
