Complete team effort: De Kock, Rutherford and spinners guide Tridents to another win
Barbados Tridents moved to the top of the CPL 2026 table with a nine-run victory over St Lucia Kings in a rain-reduced 18-overs-a-side match at Gros Islet.
Tridents' Explosive Start: After rain delayed proceedings, Quinton de Kock (38 off 15) and Brandon King (39) kickstarted the innings, taking 23 runs off Khari Campbell's fifth over before Roston Chase broke the opening stand.
Rutherford's Finish: Sherfane Rutherford powered the finish with a 27-ball fifty—his second consecutive half-century—smashing four sixes in the final four overs to guide Tridents to 177/5.
Auguste's Counter-Attack: Chasing a revised target of 178, St Lucia local boy Ackeem Auguste provided sole resistance with a blistering 28-ball 63, taking 19 off Chris Green's final over and hitting three sixes off Raom Simmonds to bring the required rate down.
Spinners Seal Control: Spin duo Gudakesh Motie (3/22) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/27) derailed the chase. Mujeeb dismissed Charith Asalanka via a juggling catch by Rutherford before Motie bowled Auguste, causing the Kings' chase to crumble to 168/7.
Middle-Overs Control: Roston Chase halted Barbados Tridents' explosive start by dismissing Quinton de Kock (38 off 15) and later Brandon King. Maheesh Theekshana maintained pressure, conceding no boundaries across his final three overs.
Rutherford's Finish: Sherfane Rutherford provided the late acceleration, launching four sixes over the final four overs while Rivaldo Clarke managed 15 off 22 at the other end. Rutherford reached a 27-ball half-century—his second consecutive fifty—to propel Tridents to 177/5.
Auguste's Solo Counter-Attack: In response, St Lucia Kings lost both openers inside the powerplay to Gudakesh Motie and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Local batter Ackeem Auguste mounted a brave chase, taking 19 off Chris Green's last over and hitting three sixes off Raom Simmonds to reach a 28-ball fifty and bring the equation down to 61 needed off 36 balls.
Spinners Seal the Match: Mujeeb broke through in the 13th over when Rutherford took a juggling catch at deep midwicket to remove Charith Asalanka. Motie then bowled Auguste in the following over, leaving Kings needing 50 off 24. Late boundaries from Amari Goodridge and Matthew Forde only reduced the final deficit to nine runs.
