Death of V Vikramraju, 92, Who Umpired India’s First Tied Test


Former international umpire V. Vikramraju died in Bengaluru on Sunday, June 7, 2026. He was 92.Karnataka State Cricket Association mourned his passing, saying he “served the game with great distinction and integrity over several decades”. Vikramraju umpired in two Tests and five ODIs, besides standing in 42 first-class matches. But none of them remained in memory more than the tied Test between India and Australia played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium from September 18 to 22 roughly 40 years ago. Stood in 2 Tests, 1985-1986, and 5 ODIs, 1984-1988. Also umpired 42 first-class matches. Post-retirement, he worked as a Match Referee in 4 first-class games and in the Karnataka Premier League, now KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy. It was the only second tied Test in the history of cricket, with the first instance being the match between Australia and West Indies in Brisbane in 1960. Raju officiated in the India vs Australia tied Test at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Sept 18-22, 1986 – only the 2nd tied Test in cricket history after Brisbane 1960.He faced criticism for giving No. 11 Maninder Singh LBW to Greg Matthews, ending India’s chase on 347, 1 run short of 348. Dara Dotiwala was the other on-field umpire. The match was the 1st Test of a series that ended 0-0.
