Donovan Ferreira powers TSK to convincing win over MI New York
Donovan Ferreira bowled a wicket-maiden and finished with figures of 3-14 as Texas Super Kings bowlers powered their team to the top of the table with a commanding win over MI New York. Ferreira remained unbeaten on 18 in a straightforward chase to lead the team to victory.
All six bowlers used by Faf du Plessis returned a wicket at least. Monank Patel, Ryan Rickelton, and Tajinder Dhillon were all injured in the Powerplay for MI New York early on. Monank and Rickelton were bowled out by Adam Milne, and Dhillon was bowled out by Hardus Viljoen after hitting the bowler with two sixes and a four. In six overs, MI NY scored 50 runs, but they lost three wickets.
They then endured a middle wobble that saw Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard and Corey Anderson fall in quick succession. As a result, MI NY found themselves at 64/7 in the 12th over. After that, a few lower-order stands gave MI NY new life. Corbin Bosch and Sunny Patel both contributed 34 runs for the eighth wicket, and the former played a 19-run partnership with Trent Boult for the ninth. In a 12-ball, 18-minute cameo, Boult arrived and swung for the fences in the final overs, hitting one for a six and two for fours. The lower order managed 43 in the last five overs to push the team to 127/9.
Naturally, that proved to be insufficient. Du Plessis got going against the New Zealand pacer in the third over with a six and a four after Boult and Bosch played two clean overs. He was out by Rushil Ugarkar in the fourth over, but TSK didn't lose for the rest of the Powerplay, even though they were only at 39/1.
In the seventh over, Saiteja Mukkamalla hit a six off Sunny, but his stand with Rilee Rossouw was also not hurried. Dhillon struck out Mukkamalla in the tenth over, and they slowly advanced the team past six per over. Until Ferreira, Milind Kumar, and Wiaan Mulder took charge and pushed the team past the finish line, TSK progressed at about the rate requested. Dhillon bowled Milind out for a 22 off 17 balls, and Ugarkar bowled Rossouw out for 18 off 23 balls to end his stint with 2-16.
TSK still needed only 29 off the last four overs when Boult returned to bowl. Ferreira greeted him with a six, followed by a one against Bosch to accelerate the remaining chasers. Ten runs off Boult and 11 off Bosch left TSK to get just eight of the last two overs. They needed only one of those two as Mulder finished it off with a six against Anderson in the 19th over.
