Full-strength India as Kohli, Rohit and Bumrah arrive to face England
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah have joined the India squad to boost the team for the upcoming matches against England.
Star reinforcements arrive
The arrival of Kohli, Rohit, and Bumrah adds experience and firepower across batting and bowling. With India’s core players now in, the team looks set to field its strongest XI to take on England. Their presence signals India are going in with intent for the England contest, whether it’s Tests, ODIs, or T20s.
Now the focus shifts to ODIs, a format that's been a mixed bag for India in recent times. Since July 2024, they have lost three of their six bilateral ODI series - away to Sri Lanka and Australia, and at home to New Zealand. But this one carries greater significance than any of those. With the ODI World Cup in South Africa just 15 months away, India have little time left to address their recurring concerns about away performances.
T20 resurgence
After a tough period in Tests, England have found their groove in white-ball cricket. Brook’s team leaned into an aggressive style, with the batting setting the tone and Jofra Archer leading a pace attack that troubled India. Despite the T20 positivity, England’s 50-over record is shaky. Since 2024: 5 losses in 7 bilateral ODI series + a winless Champions Trophy last year. They’ll take confidence from the T20s into this series, but will also be aware of their recent ODI inconsistencies.
England look aggressive and settled in T20s with Brook and Archer starring, yet their ODI form since 2024 means they’ll be keen to prove it wasn’t a one-format bounce back.
Edgbaston has been something of a fortress for England in ODIs, with seven consecutive wins stretching back to 2015. If Archer & Co can replicate the early breakthroughs they produced in the T20Is, England will fancy extending this dominance. India, who have gained reinforcements, will hope their returning stars can put up a better fight not just in the opening game, but the series itself.
Probable XI both teams :
England
Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid
India
Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah
Edgbaston has generally offered enough assistance with the new ball before flattening out into a good batting surface, making the first ten overs crucial. The forecast is for a warm day with no interruptions.
India are currently on a seven-match winless streak across the Ireland and England T20I series. The previous instance of them going winless for eight (or more) matches across formats was back in 2014-15 on the tour of Australia
