Henriques announces retirement from Australian domestic cricket

Moises Henriques, the player with the most international caps in both the BBL and domestic cricket in Australia as a whole, has announced his retirement from the Sydney Sixers and New South Wales. However, he will continue to play associate cricket for Portugal, his birthplace, once he becomes eligible to play in World Cup qualifiers. Henriques, 39, will stop playing first-class cricket in March 2025, but he did play List A cricket last summer for New South Wales and led the Sixers to the BBL final in January. Despite interest from other BBL teams, he decided to end his career as a one-club player instead of signing a new contract with Sixers. He finishes with 154 BBL matches to his name, having played in all 15 seasons including appearing in a final in his first and last season. No one has played more than Henriques' 420 domestic matches across all formats in Australia, including 110 first-class matches for NSW and 112 List A games. He also played 38 T20 matches for NSW and another six for Sixers in the Champions League when they won in 2012-13. He last played for Australia in international cricket in 2021, playing in four Tests, 16 ODIs, and 24 T20Is. Henriques stated, "I have been very lucky to call cricket my job for the past 22 years as a professional athlete." "I had interest from other BBL teams, but it just didn't feel right to go elsewhere. "I would like to express my gratitude to the people I have had the good fortune to play with and collaborate with. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here today today if it weren't for those relationships and how much I care about them. "I believe it is time for me to put my career on hold and begin looking forward to the next phase of my life," Henriques was referred to as "one of the most influential figures in Sydney Sixers and BBL history" by Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes. He finishes his career as Sixers' leading run-scorer and is currently second in the competition's all-time list. John Knox, chair of the NSW, praised Henriques' long career. Knox said, "I congratulate Moises Henriques on his outstanding playing career with the NSW Blues and Sydney Sixers, on behalf of the Cricket NSW Board, our organization, and our state's cricket community." He also mentioned the NSW Blues and Sydney Sixers. "Moises has played in 420 matches for our programs over 22 years, winning 14 major trophies, scoring over 13,000 runs, and taking 200 wickets, making him the player with the most appearances in Australian domestic cricket history. This is a remarkable record. "His lasting legacy on the playing group will be his leadership. He had this quality from a young age, and during those two decades, he led his teams in almost half of the games he played. "We look forward to continuing to work with him as Cricket NSW Foundation Director," the statement reads. "We congratulate him on his achievements as a player." Alistair Dobson, general manager of the BBL, also praised Henriques' impact. "The Big Bash League congratulates Moises Henriques on a remarkable career with the Sydney Sixers," he said. "Moses retires as one of the BBL's most decorated and influential players, the competition's most-capped player, and a three-time champion. "Moses earned the respect and admiration of teammates, opponents, and fans alike during his 15-season Sixers career. We appreciate his significant contribution to the BBL and wish him success in the future."
