Jess Kerr powers Wellington Blaze to seventh Super Smash title

Amelia Kerr is out. There was no problem for Wellington Blaze because the other Kerr, Jess, took over the team in the middle of the season and led them to their tenth overall and seventh Super Smash title. Jess, Amelia's sister, took over as captain after Amelia left the Super Smash early for the WPL. In the final, she performed admirably in all areas. On Saturday, when Auckland Hearts decided to bat, Jess didn't start off well, giving up two fours in her first over. However, she came back, especially in the last overs, and finished with figures of 4-0-28-1. She then immediately assumed a larger role. When Wellington needed 16 off the final over, she cracked two sixes and a four to ice a thrilling chase. For Wellington, offspinner Xara Jetly was the best bowler, returning 2 for 27 in her four overs and limiting Auckland to 146 for 5. In response, Wellington ran away to 48 for 0 in the powerplay. Jess hit an unbeaten 46 off 26 balls to calm Wellington's nerves and help them win another title after Georgia Plimmer's dismissal caused a brief collapse. Jess finished with 22 off Halliday in six balls on her own. "I just think funny things can happen in a last over and you just have to believe," Jess said after the final. "You should just stop there if you don't believe. So, I just knew: I've dealt with a few balls, so if it's in my slot, you just have to go for it, which is kind of easy. The circumstances are sort of set up for you. You just have to, every ball's a free-hit so yeah, that's what I tried to do. "Yeah, being from Wellington makes me so proud. They've given so much for me in my years of playing cricket, so to be able to have this win for Cricket Wellington is really special and I think our youth is doing really well too in all these tournaments too. We've got some great staff members around us who are guiding us well, and I believe we're in a really good place right now. The depth and growth are just getting better and better."
