Joburg seal playoffs spot with bonus-point win over Paarl Royals
Joburg Super Kings booked their place in the SA20 playoffs with a crucial 45-run bonus-point win over Paarl Royals in the final league match at Boland Park. The result not only sealed fourth place for Super Kings but also knocked out Durban's Super Giants.
This means that these two teams will face off again in the Eliminator round of the playoffs. Sunrisers Eastern Cape topped the table and will meet Pretoria Capitals in Qualifier 1.
Opting to bat on a slow surface, Super Kings recovered well from a steady start to post 166 for 5. The innings, which failed to gain any momentum against the slew of slow bowling, was transformed late by Leus du Plooy, who struck an unbeaten 54 off 27 balls, featuring 5 fours and 3 sixes. The final two overs saw as many as 34 runs, firmly shifting the momentum in favor of the visitors.
In the past, Michael Pepper and Neil Timmers helped the Super Kings recover from the early loss of captain James Vince to a duck. Pepper added 27 runs to Timmers' 39, but the innings lacked urgency in the middle overs. That changed in the 19th over when du Plooy faced Waqar Salamkheil and hit two sixes and a boundary. After that, Dian Forrester added another six to complete the over, giving the total a significant boost.
The Paarl Royals chase began steadily, but the pressure grew as wickets began to fall frequently in the middle overs due to the injury of captain David Miller. Imran Tahir and Prenelan Subrayen made the most of the conditions, taking five wickets for just 31 runs.
Dan Lawrence attempted to keep the chase alive with a quick 45 off 29 while Lhuan-dre Pretorius demonstrated intent at the top with a score of 32. However, Tahir removed key batters at important moments and Subrayen kept things tight from the other end. Royals lost seven wickets for 41 runs and were eventually bowled out for 122.
