Maxwell Keen to Continue T20I Career, Awaits Fitness and Form

Glenn Maxwell is optimistic about continuing his T20I career for Australia, with his sights set on the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics. The 37-year-old all-rounder has refused to set a retirement date, citing his improved performance throughout the recent T20 World Cup and his desire to contribute to the team. Maxwell has signed a two-year deal with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League and will also play in the Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, and a new Europe-based T20 competition. Glenn Maxwell is keeping his options open regarding his T20I career with Australia, despite the team's early exit from the T20 World Cup and his recent form. The 37-year-old all-rounder has retired from ODI cricket and is uncertain about his CA contract, given Australia's limited T20I schedule. However, Maxwell is keen to continue playing T20Is, with the 2028 T20 World Cup and LA Olympics on his radar. He's taking a wait-and-watch approach, focusing on his fitness and form rather than making any hasty decisions. "I think not making a decision around my future was probably based more on what's to come over the next 12 months," Maxwell said. He's also had discussions with Australian selectors and is staying busy with franchise cricket, including the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and Major League Cricket. Maxwell feels he peaked at the right time in the T20 World Cup, improving with each game. He's focusing on his fitness and energy levels rather than stats, feeling like he played his role well and still had plenty to offer. "I felt like I got better and better... Felt like I was playing my role as well as I could," he said, highlighting his positive tournament experience. Maxwell produced scores of 9, 31 and 22 at the World Cup at an uncharacteristic strike-rate of just 110.71, including the slowest 30-plus score of his career. Since the start of October he has batted 12 times across T20Is and the BBL and averages 15.55 at a strike-rate of 113.82 with a highest score of 39 not out for Stars. He also has four wickets at 45.5 in that time, with a good economy rate of 7.52, but that includes 2 for 13 against Oman in Australia's last match of the World Cup. Glenn Maxwell is taking a wait-and-see approach to his T20I future, focusing on staying fit and firing on all cylinders. With limited T20 cricket planned, he's in no rush to make any formal announcements. "I think not making a decision... was probably based more on what's to come," he said, keeping his options open for now.
