Ollie Robinson eyes Test recall after McCullum encouragement

Ollie Robinson, the captain of Sussex, revealed that head coach Brendon McCullum messaged him at the beginning of the county season to inform him that he was eligible for a recall. As a result, Ollie Robinson feels more prepared than he has ever been to play for England. Robinson, 32, played his final 20 Tests in 2024, finishing with 76 dismisses and a 22.92 average. Despite that impressive record, England decided to move on after his relationship with McCullum's management group and captain Ben Stokes deteriorated at the tour's conclusion in India. Since then, Robinson has established himself as a serious contender to lead England's offense this summer. England have decided to look for someone who can lead the attack and also provide a reliable seam option to complement the pricier options after their erratic bowling during the 4-1 Ashes loss last winter. For that position, Robinson and Sam Cook are thought to be outstanding candidates. The latter has 15 wickets at a rate of 21.73 for Essex this season, making his one and only Test appearance against Zimbabwe in the summer. Robinson, on the other hand, has 11 runs at 28.54 this domestic season. In Sussex's loss to Surrey at the Kia Oval, Robinson went 1 for 99 in 27 overs. However, he only scored his second first-class century, an unbeaten 100 off 190 deliveries to help his team recover from 92 for 7 in their innings. In the preseason, Robinson acknowledged that he would need to "knock the door down" to be selected. Even though he hasn't quite done that, Robinson said that McCullum told him at the beginning of the summer that it was already open. Rob Key, the managing director of men's magazine, has also sent him encouraging messages after watching Robinson perform live at Hove as part of his early summer visits to the counties. It is acknowledged that Robinson's desire to confront opposing batters is just as important as his skill and height in his favor. Key admires this quality, which the England attack lacks now that James Anderson and Stuart Broad have retired. Before the first Test at Lord's on June 4, England is expected to select their team for the New Zealand Test series in the week of May 18. Robinson, who made his debut in 2021 against the same opponents at the same venue, feels ready to return to the biggest stage, encouraged by those who could make the recall dream come true. According to Robinson, "I had a text from Baz at the beginning of the season, just to say that the door was still open, which was nice." "Keysy also called me to tell me to "take wickets, knock the door down," and there is still room for me. "Keysy texted me after he saw me bowl well and had a nice rhythm at the Warwickshire game in Hove. Hearing that from him was so nice. "When I assumed the captaincy at the beginning of the season, I did not realize that the door was still open for me. It appeared to be closed to me. I've definitely been motivated by it this season." Stability away from cricket appears to be a part of Robinson's readiness. He divorced his long-term partner in 2023, the mother of his daughter, and is now married to golf influencer Mia Baker. This year, they will have their first child. Robinson stated, "Everyone knows I had a lot going on." "I now have a lot of clarity regarding that circumstance. Cricket alone occupies my thoughts. I'd say that my enthusiasm for the game has returned. It took me some time to get back to where I wanted to be after I broke off my relationship with it. I just feel rejuvenated now, like I have a new chapter to write, hopefully for England. Robinson's improved fitness is yet another important aspect. He injured his back while batting in the first innings of his final Test match, the fourth Test against India at Ranchi. He was only able to bowl 13 overs in the match, all of which were in India's first innings, and the crucial loss of Dhruv Jurel was a factor in England's series-deciding defeat. Although it was unfortunate for Robinson, his teammates were left in the dust as a result of his poor conditioning. Additionally, it occurred at the conclusion of that tour, during which he had not won over management. When Robinson first announced a series of podcasts with Baker, they were taken aback. These podcasts ended up revealing a number of behind-the-scenes details, which enraged the ECB. The governing body requested that the sixth episode, which talked about the team's trip to Abu Dhabi in the middle of the season, be taken down. Robinson's century and defiant 42 in the second innings on day four, after 158.2 overs in the field, demonstrate his improved fitness. Additionally, he believes that any disagreements, particularly with Stokes and McCullum, should not be addressed. "I was probably emotionally and physically exhausted from playing cricket and maybe not fit enough for the Test arena. I played for three years, but I think I only played a few games the last year—six Tests from the beginning of 2023 to the end of February 2024. I had two or three spasms in my back. Since then, I've probably learned a little more about my body. I believe that this has an effect on my body as well as my mental clarity and the amount of baggage I carry. I've put in more effort in my training, and I probably feel more prepared now than when I first joined the England team. Additionally, I've probably matured a bit since then. If I get the call, I hope that all helps. "I never have to be honest, I have no problems. I adore Stokesy as a man, and when I played with Baz [McCullum], I really enjoyed him. India saw a few things happen, but I'm not sure what they were. In the event that there were significant issues, we never really resolved them. I think to get the message from Baz and the call from Keysy suggests, whatever it was, the door is open and just to perform and try and get back in. It's just nice to know that performances, not anything else, will get me back in.
