Stokes' Groin Injury Sparks Concerns for England's Ashes Hopes
England's Ashes campaign has taken a hit as captain Ben Stokes suffered a groin injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. Stokes, who had bowled just 10 deliveries, left the field with a right adductor complaint, adding to England's injury woes.
This is Stokes' fourth injury in the past 18 months, following knee, hamstring, and shoulder issues. The injury is a blow to England's chances, with the team already trailing 3-1 in the series.
Stokes has been a key player for England, but his workload has taken a toll on his body. He has bowled 101.1 overs in this series, his second-highest workload since 2018. Despite this, Stokes remains committed to leading England, having signed a contract extension until the 2027 home Ashes.
It is at least a silver lining for England that Stokes' injury has come on the penultimate scheduled day of the Ashes. His team are already 3-1 down, with the Ashes surrendered after three Tests, and a consolation victory was already improbable by the time he left the field.
Now that he is no longer part of England's white-ball plans, Stokes' next scheduled cricket is in on June 4 at Lord's for the first of three Tests against New Zealand. He may also target a return for Durham in the County Championship to tune up for that series.
