Sussex Crumble as Dawson Powers Hampshire to Another Win
Hampshire beat Sussex by 29 runs to extend their winning run in the T20 Blast. Hampshire: 173/6 in 20 overs. Sussex: 144 all out in 17.3 overs.
Teenager Manny Lumsden rounded things off to also take two as Hampshire moved four points clear at the summit of the South Group, whereas Sussex remain bottom with a solitary win and three losses in a row. Everything Tymal Mills touched in the early stages turned to gold, as Sussex started both innings on top.
He won the toss, got every fielding adjustment perfect and got Hawks' dangerman James Vince out in the second over. Mills went for just 13 runs in his two powerplay overs, but that was eclipsed by James Coles' unmovable darts - which went for seven runs and yorked Toby Albert.
With the bat: Dawson chipped in during Hampshire’s innings, helping push them to a competitive 173/6.With the ball: His slow left-arm orthodox did the damage, taking key wickets including Oli Carter [7 off 13, c Albert b Dawson] as Sussex collapsed. Dawson finished with 1/5 from 2 overs at 2.5 RPO, tying down the middle order.
That turned to a dictatorship of the middle when Jack Leaning was stumped off Dawson, and John Simpson was caught and bowled by Currie in quick-fire scalps.
The win kept Hampshire on a roll in the T20 Blast South Group, continuing a strong run of form. Sussex won the toss and chose to bowl, but couldn’t contain Hampshire’s total and then fell apart in the chase.
Bottom line: Liam Dawson’s all-round contribution – handy runs and a tight 1/5 spell – helped Hampshire post 173/6 and then bowl Sussex out for 144, securing a 29-run win and keeping Hampshire’s T20 Blast winning streak alive.
