Toby Radford appointed Afghanistan's batting coach
The appointment of Toby Radford as the national cricket team's batting coach was made public on Tuesday, January 13 by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). Radford will take over as batting coach from Andrew Puttick and is expected to join the team before the three-match T20I series against the West Indies.
Robert Ahmun, who was also appointed as the new strength and conditioning trainer by ACB, will also join the team prior to the team's final T20I series before the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka. The two have been given the job for one year.
In a three-match T20I series that will be played in Dubai on January 19, 21, and 22, Afghanistan will take on West Indies.
Radford is a well-known coach for Welsh cricket and a former first-class cricketer who played for Middlesex and Sussex. He is known for his expertise as an ECB Level 4 certified coach and brings a large coaching portfolio to the position. Radford also played first-class cricket for Middlesex and Sussex.
Radford, who is currently the head coach of the Dhaka Capitals, previously held the positions of head of high performance for the Bangladesh Cricket Board and batting coach for the Pakistan Cricket Board's High Performance Centre (2020-2024).
During his second stint with the Caribbean side, Radford was a key member of the West Indies coaching staff during their historic Test series victories over England in 2019 and their 2012 ICC T20 World Cup victory.
In domestic competitions, he was the head coach of Glamorgan and led Middlesex to a national T20 title in 2008. He is also the best-selling author of the cricket book Getting to Grips and an influential educator who serves as a mentor for ECB coaches.
Ahmun, on the other hand, is a top strength and conditioning (S&C) specialist from Cardiff, Wales. Ahmun has a bachelor's degree from the University of Exeter in 1998 and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
Since Jonathon Trott is expected to leave after the World Cup, ACB announced that they are now looking to hire a spin bowling coach and a head coach. "The vacancies for head coach and spin bowling coach remain despite the batting coach and strength and conditioning positions being filled. He stated, "The ACB is actively pursuing the recruitment process to secure qualified individuals for these key positions."
