Tom Curran bowls Melbourne Stars into the playoffs
With a six-wicket victory over Adelaide Strikers at the MCG on Monday, Melbourne Stars advanced into the Big Bash League playoffs with Tom Curran's second-best score of 4 for 10. Despite a late injury scare for captain Marcus Stoinis that will cause concerns for Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup, the Stars chased down the Strikers' meager total with 29 balls remaining thanks to the English seamer's devastating bowling performance on a favorable surface.
The Stars' bowlers made excellent use of the MCG surface after Stoinis won the toss and chose to field first, leaving the Strikers in disarray from the start. In the second over, Alex Carey drove Curran aerially to mid-off, where Haris Rauf made a sharp diving catch to his left. Chris Lynn tried to counterattack, but he was hit by a classic slower ball from Curran that snuck back in, putting him in front for just two. The Strikers were 14 for 3 when Peter Siddle added some bounce to catch Matthew Short's edge. They also fell to 21 for 4 before the PowerPlay ended, losing Jason Sangha to Curran.
The Strikers were in freefall at 40 for 5 at the drinks break, and Mitchell Swepson made sure there would be no recovery. Before Hasan Ali holed out to deep midwicket first ball, the leg-spinner dismissed Jamie Overton with a straighter shot that hit the stumps.
The Strikers were nine down for just 55 when Lloyd Pope was stumped by Harper charging down the track at Swepson, and Harry Manenti fell to a clever Stoinis slower-ball yorker for 7. Adelaide had been bowled out for their lowest total of the season and second-lowest in BBL history when Cameron Boyce mishit to Glenn Maxwell at long-on in the 20th over, despite scoring a counter-attacking 20 with a six off Stoinis. Curran's brilliance was perfectly complemented by Swepson's 3 for 22, and Stoinis contributed with economical figures of 2 for 8 from 3.3 overs.
The Stars got off to a nervous start, trailing by just 84 runs, when Sam Harper was caught spectacularly diving by substitute fielder Mackenzie Harvey in the deep. The hosts were down to 13 for 2 when Campbell Kellaway dragged Hasan straight to midfield without scoring. Thomas Rogers, on the other hand, was the ideal anchor, working with Blake Macdonald to form a stable team before Macdonald hit an 11-run home run. After that, Rogers scored 34 crucial runs with Stoinis. Stoinis appeared to be in trouble before retiring hurt on 23 after being struck on the thumb by Liam Scott, raising concerns regarding Australia's upcoming T20 World Cup campaign.
Rogers kept leading the chase, scoring 32 runs off 40 balls before surrendering to Overton with seven runs remaining. Curran, buoyed by his exceptional bowling performance, fittingly completed the task in style by scoring two boundaries in a four-ball cameo to secure the Stars' sixth victory from nine matches and their place in the finals, preserving their hopes of winning the BBL for the first time. The crushing defeat, on the other hand, officially put an end to Adelaide's season hopes.
