Vitel Lawes earns maiden call-up to WI squad for New Zealand ODIs

West Indies have given teenage left-arm wrist spinner Vitel Lawes his first senior call-up after naming a 15-member squad for the opening three ODIs of the five-match home series against New Zealand, to be played across Guyana and Barbados. One of the standout performers at this year's ICC Under-19 World Cup, the 19-year-old has been training with the senior team since the preparatory camp in preparation for the current home season. He took 10 wickets and bowled the most dots in the tournament. For the Guyana leg of the series, spin-bowling coach Nikita Miller has been added to the team management. He will continue to work closely with the youngster to help him transition into international cricket. Other than a few forced substitutions, the team's core remains unchanged from the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka in Jamaica. After receiving a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to fulfill his Major League Cricket obligations, Shimron Hetmyer is not available, and all-rounder Shamar Springer withdrew from selection after his mother's death. Springer will be replaced in the ODI team by Keemo Paul, who was recently selected as cover for the Test squad. Daren Sammy, West Indies' head coach, stated that the New Zealand series was an important part of the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. "We view every series we play from this point forward leading up to the 50 Over World Cup as must-win scenarios." Sammy stated, "The matches against New Zealand offer the best opportunity for us to continue our improvement as an ODI unit and win more matches for the people of the Caribbean." "The inclusion of Vitel Lawes is strategic as we continue our long-term vision of exposing players who can complement the team in conditions that best suit their skill sets," Sammy added regarding Lawes' inclusion. After the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka in Antigua, the group will meet in Guyana on July 8. For the series' final two games, any squad changes will be announced later.
