Zimbabwe's Giant Upset Sends Sri Lanka Packing, Enters Super 8
Zimbabwe stunned Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, chasing down a target of 179 with 3 balls to spare, and entered the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup unbeaten. Brian Bennett's unbeaten 63 and Sikandar Raza's explosive 45 off 26 balls powered Zimbabwe to victory. This win marked Zimbabwe's third victory over Sri Lanka in the last five months, following their earlier win over Australia.
Pathum Nissanka's good form continued as he got off to a strong start with Kusal Perera, helping Sri Lanka reach 50 in the fifth over. The pair, along with Kusal Mendis, had a solid opening partnership, but Zimbabwe's spinners, Raza and Wellington Masakadza, tried to slow them down with two overs of spin in the first four. However, they weren't as accurate or menacing as expected, allowing Sri Lanka to maintain momentum.
Zimbabwe pulled things back after Blessing Muzarabani's clever slower ball dismissed Kusal Perera, changing the game's momentum. Kusal Mendis struggled, scoring 14 off 20, before falling to Ryan Burl's legbreak. Pathum Nissanka took charge but was eventually out on a reverse sweep off Graeme Cremer, who took 2 wickets. Cremer's 4-0-27-2 spell helped Zimbabwe restrict Sri Lanka.
Pavan Rathnayake provided a late boost to Sri Lanka's innings, scoring 44 off 25 balls, including two sixes. His aggressive batting, along with Dunith Wellalage's 14 off the last over, gave Sri Lanka some momentum heading into the defence, ending their innings at 178/7.
Zimbabwe struggled against Sri Lanka's slow start, managing just 20 runs in the first three overs. However, Tadiwanashe Marumani's aggressive approach changed the game, hitting boundaries off Maheesh Theekshana and taking Zimbabwe past 50 in the eighth over.
Sri Lanka's slower bowlers, Dasun Shanaka and Dushan Hemantha, tightened the screws, conceding just 13 runs in two overs. Dunith Wellalage's clever bowling added to Zimbabwe's pressure, prompting them to promote Ryan Burl to No. 3.
Ryan Burl kept Zimbabwe in the hunt with his aggressive batting, hitting Dunith Wellalage for a four and a massive six, taking Zimbabwe to 79/2 in 10 overs. Dasun Shanaka brought Sri Lanka back, dismissing Burl for 23, leaving Zimbabwe needing 81 off 50 balls.
At this point Bennett was 37 off 32 but not for lack of trying. He was just struggling to get used to the pace of the pitch. And Raza also got off to a slow start of 7 off the first 10 balls he faced. With 61 needed off 33 balls, though, Hemantha dropped one short. Raza absolutely laid into it for a 94metre six and followed it up with a straight six. He then walked at Hemantha to steer a four to backward point.
Sri Lanka's innings was anchored by Pathum Nissanka's 62, but Zimbabwe's spinners, including Ryan Burl and Graeme Cremer, restricted them to 178/7. Zimbabwe's momentum was further boosted by Bennett's solid opening partnership with Tadiwanashe Marumani (34).
Zimbabwe 182 for 4 (Bennett 63*, Raza 45, Hemantha 2-36) beat Sri Lanka 178 for 7 (Nissanka 62, Rathnayake 44, Cremer 2-27, Evans 2-35) by six wickets
