Stephen Fleming to continue as CSK head coach
After a disappointing season, there has been speculation about Chennai Super Kings' coaching staff, but the team isn't expected to make any changes at the top.
Stephen Fleming, who has led one of the IPL's most successful eras, will remain in charge.
Despite recent calls for a change of direction from some quarters, the former New Zealand captain, who has been with CSK since their inaugural season in 2008 and has served as head coach since 2009, maintains the trust of the franchise.
In the wake of the team's recent setbacks, some members of the CSK fanbase have demanded change, even starting "Sack Fleming" campaigns on social media. However, Fleming is expected to remain in charge and serve as head coach for at least the upcoming season, so the team isn't likely to change course.
Over the past two seasons, the team has not exactly performed well, placing 10th in 2025 and eighth in the most recent season. However, CSK management intends to keep Fleming, who has been associated with the franchise ever since the IPL began.
It understands that Fleming's contract is renewed annually, and as has been the case in the past, it will be extended once more this year.
The New Zealander is in charge of Texas Super Kings, Chennai Super Kings' American subsidiary in Major League Cricket (MLC), at the moment in the United States. He also serves as the head coach there. Several significant decisions are anticipated to be made during the franchise's season review. However, none of them will include a discussion about Fleming's contract.
It is thought to be a foregone conclusion within the franchise. The review exercise will only take place after the current MLC season has ended. The obvious consequence of the development is that MS Dhoni's opinions will continue to have a significant impact on the franchise. Not that there has ever been anything to suggest otherwise, and the most recent development serves as yet another confirmation of Dhoni's persistent influence over CSK affairs.
It is not a secret that Dhoni and Fleming have a close professional relationship that has only grown stronger with each season. In the meantime, the franchise has received a few business inquiries, but none of them have included an approach for Hardik Pandya. On Monday, there was some talk that CSK and the Delhi Capitals might look into trading Khaleel Ahmed and David Miller, but both franchises have categorically denied the idea.
The CSK position at this time is that it will not trade any player. However, that was also the team's position prior to the Ravindra Jadeja deal happening last season. Although the trade situations in the IPL have a tendency to change on their own, no such move is currently in the cards.
